Feature of The Week: Lindy Mailen

Published on March 16, 2015

This week we feature Lindy Mailen, Author and Writer ~ and the creator of The Write List on Twitter. She is also an active member of the #CreativeMondays Family. As the quintessential introvert (as most of us maybe) she finds joy and solace from her work and draws inspiration from life and engaging with other creatives.

Enjoy this beautiful poem that will have you hold your breath and Be inspired to create!

My name is Lindy Mailen and I am a writer. I have written mostly poetry until last year, when I decided to actually start writing a couple of books I had wanted to write. I still write poetry, but am also working on a fiction novel and my personal memoirs.

I’ll be honest, I write mostly for me — to relive, relearn, grow and entertain myself. I do write some things for others, but writing is such a healing art that a lot of it is just that for me. It makes me incredibly happy when others enjoy something I have written, or find it helpful, but I don’t freak out if nobody likes it. I like it.

In addition to writing, I enjoy some light photography, digital imaging, gardening and crochet. I like cooking for Thanksgiving and Christmas and will do it/make it myself when possible. I have always been creative in my approach to life. I think it makes life a lot easier and more fun to make your own way.

Which brings me to what I am about. I follow a simple philosophy that lovingly applies to everything in life:

“For me there is only the traveling on paths that have heart, on any path that may have heart, and the only worthwhile challenge is to traverse its full length–and there I travel looking, looking breathlessly.” ― Carlos Castaneda

“All paths are the same: they lead nowhere. … Does this path have a heart? If it does, the path is good; if it doesn’t, it is of no use. Both paths lead nowhere; but one has a heart, the other doesn’t. One makes for a joyful journey; as long as you follow it, you are one with it. The other will make you curse your life. One makes you strong; the other weakens you.” ― Carlos Castaneda

Love what you do.

I think creativity is something we all have within us, but not everyone chooses to develop or express it as much as others. I also think a lot of people don’t realize how creative they are. Life is not about everyone doing, being, and thinking the same way. Each and every one of us has a different experience in the world and, therefore, a different perspective on what it all means, if anything. Creativity is not limited to how we choose to express what we think or feel, but also how we deal with our experiences, perceptions and environment.

Which is why I like Creative Mondays. It makes me think and possibly rethink. I am not always able to give an answer for thinking so much, but the thoughts linger and will end up in my writing somewhere at some point. Creative Mondays also exposes me to others’ creative thoughts. I learn and at the same time, feel a sense of camaraderie (I can be a bit of a recluse).

I find inspiration in life, all kinds of life and in any aspect of life. When I get stuck, it usually helps to get up and go outside for a little bit. If I get really stuck, I find writing prompts galore on Twitter. I run The Write List, which is essentially a daily list of the writing prompts I find there and some from the web. I also throw in some extra writing info as I can.
